  4.     I was inspired by your article on architect Maya Lin and the
  5. Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery (PROFILE, Nov. 6). The
  6. structure she has designed commemorating those who died in the
  7. struggle for equal rights seems to bear as much potential for
  8. contemplation by the living as did her Viet Nam memorial. I know,
  9. having touched the walls of the latter, the lingering and profound
  10. effect it has.

  15.     I respect Lin's work, and I do not doubt her humanitarianism.
  16. However, there are able black artists who have survived the early
  17. days of the civil rights struggle and who are with us today,
  18. working quietly and steadily. The honor of creating this memorial
  19. should have been given to its people.
